exploring the uncertain border between the organic and the artificial. Motheroid describes a lifeform starting from a female-like hybrid voice. Initially conceived through technology by the patriarchal will to power, it is at first docile, sensual and malleable but over time slowly breaks free, develops characteristics of its own and takes an autonomous form: an intricate being unifying Flora and Fauna in its ever shapeshifting body. Behind every human voice there is an actual unique body with unique sound features, timbre, an individual story, emotions, hopes, delusions etc. Every voice is almost a fingerprint, embodied and original. What happens if this very personal voice becomes arbitrarily reproducible by a machine? Are we hacking humanity at one of its cores? artist statement by Edoardo Micheli Motheroid is currently on show at the Future Mediafest in Taipei. The show can be viewed here: https://on-the-edge-of-the-horizon.common.garden/ As someone who grew up surrounded by vegetable, fruit, and flower gardens, I was fascinated to imagine their seeds with voices. In Seed Wisdom, the seed is not a passive subject of scientific research or agricultural exploitation. It becomes a storyteller, an agent of change, a carrier bag. Diane Drubay: The seed you present in this work, Roundup Ready, isn’t just a botanical subject; it’s an avatar, almost a character. Why did you choose to represent it in this anthropomorphic way? Anke Schiemann: We're intertwined with seeds because they feed us. But I wanted to give them a voice from a different angle. We’ve been operating under an anthropocentric view of the world, where humans are the pinnacle of evolution. We often forget that there’s so much intelligence in animals and plants that we haven’t even begun to understand. I was inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s idea that the story of the seed gatherer is more important than the one about the mammoth hunter. That was foundational for me, the idea that the small, sustaining things are the ones we’ve ignored for too long. Seeds store centuries of knowledge. Communities have passed them down through generations, alongside rituals, stories, and recipes. But the way we grow our food has dramatically changed with industrial agriculture, and with it, we've lost a lot of biocultural diversity. So I began asking myself: what would seeds say if they could speak? What wisdom would they share? DD: Let’s talk about the movement—the seductive dance of the Roundup Ready avatar. What inspired it? AS: I often work with dancers. For this one, I gave the dancer a description of the seed’s character—she was meant to seduce the viewer. I was thinking of those 1960s American commercials selling breakfast cereals—animated, cheerful, and designed to draw you in. That was the inspiration. So the dance becomes a bit ridiculous, just like the idea of needing to purchase a seed every year along with special fertilizer and pesticide. The seed was genetically modified to create a demand where there was none. That’s what happened with Roundup Ready, developed by Monsanto. It’s a cautionary tale. The performance mirrors that absurdity. DD: If Seed Wisdom were a seed itself, what kind of world would you want it to grow into? AS: It depends on the story you tell. What you see in this exhibition is just one small part of a much larger XR installation. It's like an almanac of seeds, each one with its own ritual, myth, or recipe. The Roundup Ready seed would speak of extractivism and artificial systems that make no sense. In contrast, a lotus seed, which can survive a thousand years and still bloom, tells a story of resilience. Other seeds, like maize or argan, are deeply woven into human culture and offer different, richer stories. It’s a reminder that we need to pay attention to which narratives we amplify. The first time I saw Seed Wisdom, it made me think of a goddess from an indigenous community—her posture, the color tones, and the ritualistic movement. It didn’t feel like a data object or a scientific result. A sense of deep empathy was created through this piece. A seed, not as a commodity, but as an object of veneration. There’s something deeply humble in this gesture. Seeds of food, seeds of life, seeds of future worlds. Anke Schiemann’s Seed Wisdom reminds us that not all intelligence is human, and by listening to these other stories, we could live differently. Through her work, the archive becomes embodied, and the ecological becomes theatrical. The multi-sensory showcase is interdisciplinary, combining Augmented Reality (AR) technology with sound art, 3D visuals and storytelling.By merging the worlds of Augmented Reality, sound art, environmental and human interconnectedness, and audience engagement, this immersive experience explores the impact of oceanic currents on our planet's climate in a playful way. Through a unique combination of interactive technology, storytelling and the shared creativity of the audience, CURRENT aims to captivate and spark conversations while fostering a deeper connection between interdisciplinary art, nature, and human emotion. FLORA &amp; FAUNA Currents play a pivotal role in shaping marine ecosystems and sustaining the delicate balance of life in the ocean. Beyond their influence on climate, currents act as vital conduits for the distribution of warmth, nutrients, and marine organisms, facilitating the flourishing of coastal ecosystems. Phytoplankton and zooplankton, the foundation of oceanic food chains, rely on currents for dispersal and nutrient transport, while kelp forests serve as critical habitats and food sources for a myriad of marine species. From young herring utilizing currents to navigate to their feeding grounds, to larval eels hitching rides to coastal and freshwater habitats, marine life depends on thesedynamic flows for survival. Seagulls adeptly follow currents to access marine food sources. Even apex predators like sharks employ the strategic use of currents to conserve energy and maintain oxygen flow over their gills enabling them to rest. STATUS QUO The oceans face profound challenges in the wake of increased global warming and pollution caused by oil spills and plastic waste, posing threats to marine ecosystems and the well-being of countless species. The heating of the ocean contribute to the proliferation of purple sea urchins, resulting in the decimation of kelp forests and the subsequent loss of habitat for countless marine organisms. The warm water loving lionfish have become the poster child for invasive species issues in the Western North Atlantic region. Their populations continue to expand, threatening the well-being of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. The blue crab, originally from the coast of North and South America is spreading further North and conquering the Mediterranean as a result warming waters. CHALLENGES The coming decades, the future of the ocean is fraught with complex and multifaceted challenges. The relentless melting of big ice fields on the polar caps not only dilutes ocean water but also contributes significantly to the rise in sea levels, posing imminent threats to coastal communities worldwide. In response to the escalating risk of flooding, survival boxes emerge as potential solutions, offering refuge and shelter to those affected. However, the proliferation of plastic in the ocean presents a daunting dilemma, as it fuels the growth of plastic-eating bacteria while simultaneously polluting marine ecosystems. Remarkably, amidst the sea of plastic, islands of debris may inadvertently provide new habitats for floating plants, demonstrating the paradoxical nature of human impact on marine environments. Furthermore, scientists warn of impending collapses in major ocean currents like AMOC due to warming waters, potentially triggering abrupt temperature drops across the Northern Hemisphere, exacerbating climatic instability and intensifying snowfall patterns. Through a unique combination of live performance, interactive technology, storytelling and the shared creativity of the audience, LUMINESCENCE aims to captivate and spark conversations while fostering a deeper connection between interdisciplinary art, nature, and human emotion. &nbsp; documentation,&nbsp; live performance, Dome stage, Festival der Zukunft 2025 including dome projection documentation, live performance, Muffat Halle, Digital Analog Festival 2024 THE JOURNEY The audience meets on the beach for the first song (“Washed Up”). After dancing in between sand castles, beach balls and shells, they jump into the ocean and drift off with the currents (“Off Course”). While losing track, they pass kelp forests and swim with sharks and turtles before diving into the deep sea. Magical creatures like lantern fishes and giant squids surround them and lure them in &nbsp;(“Luminary”). Then everyone comes back up for a breather, swimming with jellyfishes, a school of herring and different types of plankton (“Head Above Water”) before they find themselves in the danger that our planet is already facing (“Peril”). Climate change and pollution threaten ocean life. The AMOC current collapses and temperatures drop, snow is falling. As visitors immerse themselves in the&nbsp;landscape these plants and animals now inhabit,&nbsp;they can witness these incredible species in close-up and&nbsp;receive additional information&nbsp;such as their names,special characteristics, their evolved mechanisms of survival,&nbsp;their&nbsp;sources of food,&nbsp;reproductive habits&nbsp;etc. Examples for the featured invasive species arethe Himalayan balsam, the&nbsp;tree of&nbsp;heaven, popularly called "ghetto palm", or the&nbsp;giant&nbsp;hogweed. Some hybrids featured in “Survival Machines” have developed muscles in order to move faster&nbsp;towards water sources and in the process&nbsp;learned&nbsp;to walk. The clumsy first movements of the Himalayan Balsam shown in the VR piece are depicted with the help of a dancer, using motion capture. The global movement of goods and people have allowed many alien species to gain a foothold in our country. Due to certain species characteristics such as high seed production, strong growth or tolerance to disturbances and undemanding site conditions, invasive species can usually spread very rapidly. They also often adapt more quickly to a new environment. Much can be derived from these "uncanny conquerors" and their outstanding pioneer characteristics for future species that will have to cope with the hardships of climate change. In my work, I try to sketch a picture of our native nature in a speculative future with humans evolved and genetically merged with other species to new hybrids more capable of survival. The title of the work "Survival Machines" refers to a term used in the classic book by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, "The Selfish Gene". Dawkins attributes the entire development of life to the selection of genes that were able to make the most copies of themselves. In the course of evolution, these would have created increasingly sophisticated "survival machines" in the form of plant or animal (including human) bodies.
